If your client project requires more than a standard platform

Many system integrators today have their own embedded developers and established platforms. Additional external support is therefore not needed for every task - but rather in cases where a project requires specialized expertise, additional capacity, or long-term technical support.

This is precisely where SIGMA complements your team. We work with hardware provided by you or your client and handle the agreed-upon hardware-related software scope within a clearly defined division of roles.

Whether it's a full-scale development project or targeted support for your platform team, SIGMA tailors its approach to the task at hand and the project model that best suits your needs.

How Comprehensive Product Development Led to System Integration Expertise

SIGMA has a history spanning more than 30 years. The company initially developed complete embedded products and later applied the experience gained from this work to BSPs, standard kits, and system integrator projects. The timeline shows the key milestones in the company’s development - from Swingline to today’s support for platform and solution partners.

03 / PRACTICAL EMBEDDED PROJECTS

From a Single Product to Broader Embedded Project Practice

Starting in the early 2000s, SIGMA became increasingly involved in embedded projects, system testing, and hardware-related software development. The experience gained from working with various devices and platforms laid the foundation for subsequent partnerships with system integrators and platform providers.

04 / BSPS AND EVALUATION KITS

Software platforms for SoMs, standard kits, and customer projects

Platform providers needed a usable software foundation for SoMs, baseboards, and evaluation kits, consisting of an operating system, drivers, tools, sample applications, and a BSP. SIGMA provided support in the development and customization of this platform software for standard kits and related customer projects.

05 / SPECIALIZED SUPPORT TODAY

Provide targeted support where additional depth is needed

Today, SIGMA focuses on tasks where system integrators need additional technical expertise, capacity, or long-term support—ranging from complete BSP scopes to targeted customizations within a project.

Milestone 01 / 05

This development explains why SIGMA is able to take on both comprehensive BSP projects and clearly defined specialized tasks. Today, the key factor is selecting the right project model for the system integrator, the client project, and the technical requirements.

When to Involve SIGMA as a System Integrator

Not every task requires the long-term development of additional specialized skills within our own team. However, situations regularly arise in client projects where targeted external support ensures the project’s progress, expands technical options, or creates additional development capacity.

Conversely, SIGMA can, if needed and with the consent of all parties involved, facilitate technical contact between product companies and suitable system integrators. Drawing on our experience with various platforms and project configurations, we help align hardware, software, and support requirements at an early stage.

Anspruchsvolle hardwarenahe AufgabenChallenging hardware-related tasks
Specific requirements for system software, drivers, the kernel, the boot process, or platform behavior call for experience across multiple complex areas of responsibility.
Gebundene EntwicklungskapazitätenCommitted Development Capacity
In-house teams are fully occupied with ongoing client projects, releases, or platform maintenance. SIGMA takes on defined work packages or supplements the team on a project-by-project basis.
Betreuungsintensive FolgephasenFollow-up Phases Requiring Intensive Care
After development and delivery, tasks such as error analysis, stabilization, adjustments for subsequent versions, transition to mass production, and technical support in the field arise.
Weitergehende KundenanforderungenAdditional Customer Requirements
If an end customer requires more than a platform's standard features, SIGMA provides support in implementing the agreed-upon additional requirements.

You as system provider remains strong - SIGMA makes targeted additions

SIGMA provides support wherever your system integrator needs additional technical expertise or capacity. This enables you to offer your customers even complex embedded projects without having to maintain every specialized discipline in-house on a permanent basis.

At the same time, the collaboration remains flexible: Depending on the project, SIGMA takes on a clearly defined task, serves as technical reinforcement within your project team, or supports an expanded development and support environment.

For you as system provider

You'll expand your technical implementation capabilities and be able to focus on customer communication, hardware, the overall project, and your own platform priorities.

For your client project

Specialized embedded tasks are handled by experienced developers, while responsibilities and interfaces remain jointly defined.

For the collaboration

The scope is scalable - ranging from a targeted analysis or adjustment to long-term technical support.

Two Project Models

SIGMA works both directly with end customers and on projects with system integrators. The technical quality remains the same, but the collaboration and communication channels differ.

Embedded BSP Development in a System Integration Project

A Board Support Package forms the hardware-related software foundation of an embedded platform. Depending on the customer project, customizations may be required at multiple levels - not always comprehensively, but often in a mutually dependent manner.

SIGMA handles the agreed-upon tasks within this software foundation and coordinates the interfaces with the customer’s system integrator and the partners involved.

Boot Chain and System Startup

Configurations related to startup behavior, boot media, and the handoff to the operating system.

Kernel and Hardware Configuration

Configuration and customization of the system software for the respective platform and the agreed-upon scope of functionality.

Device Tree and Platform Description

Mapping of the specific hardware, interfaces, and components for the embedded Linux system.

Drivers and Special Hardware Functions

Integration, customization, or error analysis for agreed-upon hardware-related components.

Image, Services, and System Configuration

Assembly of a customized target system with the required system services and configurations.

Ideas for Standard Kits and Platforms

Based on our experience from numerous projects, we can provide ideas for the further development of standard kits and platforms upon request.

From the Request to the Agreed-Upon Work Package

We often start with standard kits and established platforms that are to be specifically expanded or adapted for a client project. To ensure that external support adds value to the project, we clarify the technical starting point, task allocation, and handoff points early on.

Understanding the Current Situation

What platform, hardware, software version, and technical goal are involved?

Aufgaben sauber abgrenzen

Clearly Define Responsibilities

Which tasks remain the responsibility of the system integrator, which ones does SIGMA handle, and what interfaces exist with other partners?

Umsetzung transparent begleiten

Providing Transparent Oversight of Implementation

Work steps, interim results, and technical decisions are tracked in a coordinated project model to ensure transparency.

Ergebnis übergeben oder weiter betreuen

Hand Over the Results or Continue Providing Support

Depending on the agreement, we will either hand over the project to your team, work with you on further development, or continue to provide technical support.

Extensive project experience, without being tied to any specific hardware

SIGMA does not develop its own hardware and is not tied to any single platform. This independence allows us to make technical assessments based on the specific requirements of each project - not on the basis of a particular hardware portfolio.

Our proven experience includes, among other things, ARM-based platforms, NXP i.MX and TI Sitara SoCs, custom carrier boards, and various Embedded Linux and Windows Embedded environments.

As much handover as your project model requires

System integration projects differ depending on whether SIGMA completes a single task, remains involved in the project long-term, or hands over a development milestone for further use by your team. For this reason, the scope of the handover is determined on a project-by-project basis.

Typical components may include agreed-upon source code, technical documentation, build and integration instructions, and agreed-upon handover milestones. Upon request, SIGMA can accompany the continued use of the solution in the customer’s project through to production readiness, provide support for follow-up tasks, or handle technical after-sales support.
